I'm in my fourth year at Carnegie Mellon University studying Communication Design and Human-Computer Interaction. What I enjoy most about being a designer is One: it’s all about caring people and helping them have enjoyable moments in their everyday lives. Two: it requires me to be both creative and analytical, keeping me on a wide spectrum of thinking, which makes it challenging and yet exciting to be a designer.
There are three dimensions of design that Don Norman says in his book Emotional Design: visceral, behavioral and reflective. I want to design things that satisfy all of these aspects, taking into account aesthetics, usability and, more importantly, lasting values people are left behind with from the whole experience of a design.
I hope to become a designer who can think outside of the constraints of a medium. While my interests lie in dealing with digital media, I believe what really makes a good design is not the container, but rather its content. In this sense, I'd like to call myself a design think-er and do-er rather than limiting myself under a certain title. I strongly believe that designers are given power in shaping our behaviors, experiences and the world around us. I want to use such power to benefit people and the world by changing it into a more desired state.
